Hi! Eric Murcia here with another episode of Tech Tip Tuesday. Today we’re going to be talking about a couple of things that Cortana, the built-in version of Siri for Windows, can do to make your life a little bit easier. Here’s one of the neat little examples that I have.
Manage Cortana’s Skills
If we click on this search bar which would normally activate Cortana, and she’d start asking us what we want to do. Except I don’t have my microphone enabled. If we click on this little notebook. We can go under “Manage Skills”. I don’t have her setup because this is my test environment. Otherwise, it would show up as a shortcut already.
I’m going through this list under “Manage Skills”, and one of the things I can do is I can have Cortana track packages. If I click on “Add a package”, come in here, and go ahead and enter my tracking number. The system is going to go out and recognize it, and there we go. Now I will get automatic popup notifications when Cortana recognizes that the package has shipped or it’s been delivered.
I know there’s a lot of plugins for UPS and FedEx, but rather than have to deal with all those different plugins, you can do it all here. It’s all built into Windows 10 right out of the box. You don’t have to do anything special. Any computer that you move to where you use the same Microsoft login, it’s going to do the exact same thing for you. I’m going to go ahead and remove that because I don’t want to track that package.
More Skills Available
Under “Manage Skills”, you can see there’s a lot of different things that we can have Cortana do. Setting up reminders so she’ll come on and tell you. Tracking flights, sports scores, weather and more.
There are so many things that are already built into the laptops and desktops that we use every single day. That’s technology we just don’t avail of because it’s not very well-advertised by Microsoft. That’s your tech tip for this week. I look forward to talking to you again next week.
