Remember when picking an iPhone just meant you had an iPhone? Those days are gone. The iPhone 11 featured three different models to choose from. Apple announced the latest iPhone models this week. This year, the iPhone 12 features four different models. Each model targets different users by pricing, size, and capabilities.
iPhone 12 – Starting at $799
This 6.1-inch model replaces the iPhone 11. iPhone 12 marks a return to a square-edged design reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and 5. The front and back are made of glass, but Apple upgraded the front cover to a new Ceramic Shield. It replaces the previous cover and adds 4X drop performance.
In general, all four models share the same basic design and look identical apart from the size, cameras, and type of metal used in the body (aluminum vs. stainless steel on the Pro models).
iPhone 12 introduces 5G to iPhone users. 5G networks still growing and will expand over time. However, areas with 5G connectivity will benefit from blazing-fast internet speeds. Combined with the A14 Bionic processor, this will be the fastest iPhone ever (isn’t every new iPhone?).
Apple resurrected the old MagSafe moniker and implemented similar technology within all models of the iPhone 12. MagSafe-compatible chargers and accessories snap into place on the back of the iPhone. Many of us have placed our phones on a wireless charger only to find it with a depleted battery later. MagSafe eliminates that problem.
You’ll find the Ultra Wide camera introduced last year on all iPhone 12 models alongside the standard Wide camera. All iPhone 12 models gain the benefit of Night Mode shooting capabilities. The A14 chip improves Night Mode and video capabilities as well.
Storage starts at 64GB, but you can upgrade to 128GB and 256GB options for an additional fee.
iPhone 12 Mini – Starting at $699
At its core, the iPhone 12 Mini is an iPhone 12… smaller. While shrinking the phone down to a 5.4-inch screen, Apple still left nothing out of this smaller package. It’s the smallest iPhone since the 2016 iPhone SE, yet it offers a larger screen thanks to the edge-to-edge design. It comes with the same storage capacities as the iPhone 12. For those of you tired of big phones, you’ll love this design. It makes one-handed operation easy, fits in your pocket, and costs less.
iPhone 12 Pro – Starting at $999
Again, the iPhone 12 Pro virtually mirrors the iPhone 12. However, this model includes a third camera. This third camera’s telephoto lens offers a 2x optical zoom. When used alongside the new LIDAR sensor, you’ll see improved augmented reality and faster autofocus in low light. Pro models also shoot video in Dolby HDR at up to 60fps. The standard iPhone 12 can only shoot at 30fps. The 12 Pro doubles the storage capacity of the first two options. It starts at 128GB, and you can also upgrade to 256GB and 512GB as well.
iPhone 12 Pro Max – Starting at $1,099
The iPhone 12 Pro Max includes everything the other models have. Only two things set this phone apart: size and cameras. A 6.7-inch screen makes this the biggest iPhone ever made. The camera system may look the same as the 12 Pro, but the Pro Max hides the truth behind the lens.
A bigger camera sensor sits inside the primary Wide camera that takes in more light while shooting. This means low-light and Night Mode photos will look even better than those shot on the 12 Pro. Additionally, optical stabilization involves moving the sensor instead of the lens. It works faster and much better. To top things off, the telephoto lens jumps to 2.5x instead of 2x.
Which To Choose?
Ultimately, the standard iPhone 12 offers everything you could need for less than the Pro models. It’s fast and takes decent photos. You can’t go wrong here.
If you want a smaller phone that fits in your budget and your pocket, pick the iPhone 12 Mini.
The iPhone 12 Pro tries to offer the best of all worlds. Only select this model if the Pro Max is too big for you.
Looking for a big screen and the best photos possible on an iPhone? You’ll find everything in the 12 Pro Max.
No matter what model you choose, each iPhone 12 model brings something to the table. Time for an upgrade? You can preorder yours now!
